How Man-U's line up will look like...
Manchester United have completed yet another summer
signing after announcing a deal for Sporting defender Marcos
Rojo. The versatile Argentinean will be a major asset to Louis
van Gaal, who is struggling to field a back line composed of
seasoned players at the moment.
Rojo suely won’t be the last new arrival of the summer
however, with United reportedly eyeing up two stars in
particular. Van Gaal has acknowledged he’d love to sign Real
Madrid’s Angel Di Maria in the past, while the pursuit of
Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal is no secret.
With the three players mentioned above in mind, talkSPORT
takes a look at how the Red Devils could line-up should all of
the stars end up at Old Trafford.
Rojo to rule the left?
Marcos Rojo largely played at left back for Argentina at the
World Cup, but when playing for Sporting on a weekly basis
he tends to operate at centre back. His engine and physical
strength make him an ideal candidate to occupy the left of
United’s back three, while he also has experience of the role,
given he has played in that system with Argentina on
occasion.
Di Maria the wingback?
Angel Di Maria is comfortable playing in a number of
positions, making his name as a winger while recently
returning to the central midfielder’s role he played in his
Benfica days. One position he could be particularly useful in
is that of the left wing back. Under Jose Mourinho Di Maria
forged a reputation for protecting the full back behind him,
often tracking back into more or less the same position as the
defender, so his defensive quality isn’t at doubt. Most
importantly, his dribbling and crossing would provide plenty
of quality at the other end of the pitch in this position.
Vidal to partner Herrera?
Some United fans seemed to think Ander Herrera was the
answer to all of the club’s problems in midfield, but it’s fairly
evident that the Basque can’t do everything on his own, and
that explains the Red Devils’ continued pursuit of another
midfielder in Arturo Vidal. The Chilean is a brilliant all round
player, putting just as much work in off the ball as he does
on it, and that would make him the ideal candidate to partner
Herrera behind Juan Mata . A midfield featuring Herrera, Mata
and Vidal would have bags of creativity, allowing Wayne
Rooney and Robin van Persie to focus on putting the ball in
the back of the net.
